Massive Maritime Workshop Rises in Steel

16th April 2003

A mobile rollforming machine has been used on-site in Western Australia for the first time as part of one of the most innovative industrial projects in the Asia Pacific region.

The Australian Marine Complex at Cockburn Sound is one of the biggest maritime activity clusters in the Asian Pacific region, combining marine, defence and resources industries.

It is one of the world's most technologically advanced shipbuilding, marine engineering and fabrication centres.

Roofing specialist Fielders used its on-site mobile rollforming mill technology to roll sheets of COLORBOND® Ultra steel for the 10-storey high, 80-metre by 80-metre fabrication building at the Australian Marine Complex.

The massive structure is being built by Multiplex Constructions and developed with Western Australian and Federal Government support.

Four separate precincts make up the complex that sits on the edge of the Indian Ocean near Jervoise Bay, south of Perth.

As part of the Common User Precinct, the fabrication building provides world-class, multipurpose facilities for the fabrication, assembly and load-out of pre-assembled units of up to 15,000 tonnes for local, national and international projects.

To ensure the longevity of the facilities, building architects The Buchan Group specified COLORBOND® Ultra steel for the roof, walls and doors of the facility.

Developed by BHP Steel as part of its premium products range, COLORBOND® Ultra steel offers a superior level of service life and performance in severe coastal and industrial environments.

Roofing contractor B&N Upton called on Fielders' on-site mobile rollformer because of increased transport efficiencies, easier erection, longer-lasting installation properties and a higher standard of presentation.

Fielders rollformed approximately 7000 square metres of COLORBOND® Ultra steel in 40-metre-long sheets in the colour Surfmist for the roof of the fabrication building.

It also rollformed 6,700 square metres of COLORBOND® Ultra steel in 38-metre-long wall sheets for the doors.

Fielders state manager Rick Davies said his company's mobile rollforming machine provided an efficient, simple roofing solution.

"Fielders mobile rollforming technology provides architects with the flexibility to design roofing with longer single spans, eliminating the inefficiencies of step joints," Mr Davies said.

The walls of the fabrication building are also clad in COLORBOND® Ultra steel in the colours Dune and Deep Ocean.

The roof and walls of three ancillary buildings on the site are clad in corrugated COLORBOND® Ultra steel in matching colours.
