Melbourne's Massive Garden Show a Record Breaker

2nd May 2003

Melbourne's recent International Flower and Garden Show attracted record crowds this year, reinforcing its status as the biggest garden show in the Southern Hemisphere.

Over 131,000 people visited the show in Melbourne's Exhibition Gardens from April 2 to 6, substantially more than in 2002.

Nursery and Garden Industry Association (Victoria) show organiser Alan Hollensen said there had been a strong response to the 'Accreditation Avenue' display which was designed to encourage garden show visitors to shop at accredited garden centres.

Show organisers selected fencing made from COLORBOND® steel to provide a stylish backdrop to the plants on display.

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show featured over 300 metres of fencing made from COLORBOND® steel for the displays along Accreditation Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares of the show.

The fencing posts, rails and infill panels made from COLORBOND® steel are available in 14 colours which complement contemporary design trends.

COLORBOND® steel made by BHP Steel has been tested for over 30 years to meet the demands of the Australian environment.

Mr Hollensen said the fencing made from COLORBOND® steel in the colours Evergreen and Willow provided an attractive backdrop for the display and reinforced the show's message of quality.

The fencing selected for the show - in the distinctive sawtooth style which shows the same profile on both sides - was supplied by New Style Fencing of Rowville.

Geoff Hobbs of New Style Fencing said the response to the fencing was positive with many visitors commenting on its affordability compared to the alternatives.

"We had many comments on the overall clean, tidy look of our steel fences and the safety provided by the lack of rails - keeping intruders out - plus they were pleasantly surprised by its affordability," he said.

Mr Hollensen said visitors typically spent an average of more than four hours at the show.

"We received visitors from all over Australia and New Zealand," he said. "Many organised coach groups in Australia made a real outing of it."
