The Australian hay shed has inspired an award-winning steel home that features a unique home-within-a-home building system.

Specialist Newcastle builders Heaton Smith constructed the home in the Newcastle suburb of Glendale, capturing the Most Innovative Use of Steel Award in the Housing Industry Association ' s Hunter region.

Heaton Smith also were named finalists in the Custom Built Home Under $500,000 category.

The design by Newcastle architects Bourne + Blue adopted the novel approach of using thermally efficient steel roofing panels and external steel walls for the home under a completely separate steel roof canopy.

The highly unusual design features a 900mm breezeway between the roof canopy and the house underneath - all of which features extensive use of ZINCALUME® steel internally and externally.

Bourne + Blue project architect Derren Lowe describes the design concept of the steel portal frame roof over the house proper as like the fly that covers a tent.

" The home is situated on a cul de sac in a semi-rural area that is quite hidden away and the owners wanted to capture the feeling of living in the bush, " said Mr Lowe.

" The design and choice of steel is also largely influenced by the need to provide bushfire protection for the house, which incorporates a sophisticated sprinkler system mounted on the ZINCALUME® steel structure.

" We also used ZINCALUME® steel for its rural connotations of sheds and farm buildings - and the steel theme carries through into the internal ceilings and walls. "

The home uses 100mm-thick Ritek Custom Panels for the composite roof and ceilings, providing an R2.1 thermal efficiency rating.

Heaton Smith completed the challenging construction task, meeting a requirement to minimise any disturbance to the natural bushland site.

Phil Smith of Heaton Smith said an area only a couple of metres larger than the finished house was cleared within the virgin bushland to protect the environment and retain a privacy screen around the home.

" We were breaking new ground with most of the job, but our expertise lies in combining our skills as builders, plumbers and joiners to achieve our goal, " he said.

" The architects devised all the concepts according to the owners ' brief and we worked closely with them to bring the project to fruition.

" For Heaton Smith Building Contractors to win an award is testimony to the design quality of the final product - which actually went beyond the expectation of the owners. "
