The home office of a Victorian architect is challenging misplaced preconceptions about the use of steel on relatively small-scale residential projects.

Architect Peter Woolard from Studio 101 Architects turned to steel to create a contemporary split-level townhouse on a small and narrow site in a council-designated heritage precinct of Geelong.

The use of COLORBOND® steel on the roof, ceiling, eaves and a feature blade wall resulted in a cost effective, low maintenance, aesthetically striking building.

" The project reinforced Studio 101 ' s already strong commitment to the use of BHP steel products, " Mr Woolard said.

" The design purpose of using COLORBOND® steel was just as much a driving force as the product ' s economy and maintainability. "

COLORBOND® steel now comes in a palette of 20 colours, selected to suit all types of buildings - from an inner city office tower, sleek downtown apartments or the quintessential rural homestead.

The new colours feature an advanced super polyester pre-painted coating technology that is proven, by extensive exposure to testing, to help keep COLORBOND® steel looking newer for longer.

An angled blade wall made from COLORBOND® steel in the colour Shale Grey which runs along the western side of the home is an important feature of the building.

The wall emphasises the extruded length of the house, with COLORBOND® steel simplifying installation and providing a long term, low maintenance material.

Internally, the raked ceiling and eaves made from the steel breaks down the barrier between the interior and exterior, particularly through the high level windows.

COLORBOND® steel in the colour Surfmist was specified internally to allow the use of halogen uplighting throughout the length of the house - providing stunning lighting effects at sunset and night time.

COLORBOND® steel in the colour Shale Grey is also used on the roof of the building.

" Designed for a very lean budget, the use of lightweight materials, particularly COLORBOND® steel, fixed to the structural steel frame, produced a powerful yet cost effective result, " Mr Woolard said.

" Externally, a quick hose down of the walls every six months is all that is needed. Internally the steel is maintenance free. "

Mr Woolard said community reaction had been overwhelming.

" We suspect the project has challenged some of the public ' s preconceptions about the acceptability of boldly expressing steel with an exciting fusion of materials for small-scale residential projects. "

Each of the names of the 20 colours have been trademarked to distinguish COLORBOND® steel in the marketplace and to ensure absolute confidence among customers that it is the genuine article.
