Steel
curves have become a signature in homes by a multi award-winning Sunshine
Coast builder whose designs are increasingly being sought after by
young home buyers.
Style-Line Building has received the Queensland Housing Industry
Association's Most Innovative Use of Steel award for its latest
home where curves are again the dominant features.
Style-Line principal Graeme Walters said the use of COLORBOND®
steel and the ability to create curved roofscapes and walls had
become a signature in all his homes.
"Young people definitely prefer this contemporary look over
conventional brick and tile," said Mr Walters.
"The curved look is also repeated internally with eye-catching
lines inside the home to the walls and ceilings - there is hardly
a straight wall in this home.
"One of our hallmarks is the 'tank look' near the entrance
to the home - a curved wall finished externally in ZINCALUME® steel."
The home at Buderim on Queensland's Sunshine Coast features opposing
curves on the two main roofs, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms
and cantilevered external decks which are tied back to the main
structure with steel rods.
Attention to detailing includes specially fabricated steel flashings
to finish the wall cladding in ZINCALUME® steel and the roof cladding
in COLORBOND® steel.
BHP Steel has just expanded the range of COLORBOND® steel to a complete
palette of 20 colours which all feature trademarked names, covering
a complete tonal range of grey, green, blue, red and cream selected
to suit all types of buildings.
The HIA judges complimented partner Ros Walters' use of colour
and curved steel in the design, which they said signified and magnified
the character of the home.
Graeme Walters said that since the Sydney hailstorm in 1999 he
had decided to use only steel roofing on all his new homes.
"I have never had one leak in a roof made from COLORBOND® steel
- and as a builder I can never give a better recommendation for
a roof than that," he said.
"Younger home buyers are absolutely sick to death of the traditional
project homes.
"However, by using steel we can achieve a contemporary style
of home at the same price."
