Sydney-based
steel fencing company Gram Engineering has reached a major milestone
in Australian steel manufacture with the production of more than 100,000
tonnes of GRAMLINE fencing.
With an average residential fence representing about half a tonne
of steel, 100,000 tonnes would create a continuous fence long enough
to stretch for about 10,000 kilometres - the distance from Sydney
to Bombay.
Ron Mann, managing director of Gram Engineering, said the achievement
would motivate the company to strive for even higher goals.
"We were alerted by BHP Steel - which produces the COLORBOND®
steel from which our GRAMLINE fencing is made - that we had passed
the 100,000 tonne mark," said Mr Mann.
"It has taken us about 10 years to reach this total and we
are now determined to reach 250,000 tonnes in even less time."
Ron Mann established Gram Engineering In 1975 by leasing a small
factory near Yennora in Sydney, producing a limited line of pool
and garden fencing.
Over the next seven years Gram Engineering experimented with different
product lines and in 1984 began using COLORBOND® steel to manufacture
boundary fencing - an initiative that would shape its future.
Ron Mann said the company was constantly seeking new ways to improve
its products and services.
Gram Engineering introduced the GRAMLINE fencing range and established
the concept of a double-sided fence with a saw tooth profile that
has the same appearance from both sides.
GRAMLAT steel lattice, a three-dimensional steel lattice rollformed
from COLORBOND® steel by Gram Engineering is another innovation developed
by the company.
"We are a 100 percent Australian-owned company that prides
itself on its ability to innovate with new products," Ron Mann
said.
"In many cases we also design and build the manufacturing
technology to produce our product range from steel supplied by BHP
Steel."
