Plantation Style Homes Bloom on Former Flower Farm
16th January 2003

The former Brisbane bayside site of a flower farm is now providing plantation style housing for new homebuyers. The flower farm supplied thousands of gladiolis for Dame Edna Everage's performances across Australia and overseas during the past 20 years.

Redeveloped as the Bayfields Estate, Wellington Point, its contemporary plantation style homes draw on the classic Queenslander style that reflects the unique location alongside Moreton Bay.

Corrugated steel roofing is an intrinsic feature of the traditional Queenslander housing style and the overwhelming majority of homes at Bayfields feature roofing made from COLORBOND® steel, developed by BHP Steel for Australian conditions.

Brent Fletcher of Ausbuild, joint developers of Bayfields, said the estate features large allotments coupled with a building theme that represents a rebirth of original Queenslander style.

"Because of its position very close to the Bay, we had a vision that was based on the rural heritage of the flower farm and developed guidelines for a building style that reflected the theme which we are calling contemporary plantation style," he said.

"The style is quintessentially that of the old Queenslander home with corrugated roofs made from COLORBOND® steel, generous eaves, louvres, lots of light and ventilation, and taller ceilings.

"The design makes the most of the Queensland climate, acknowledging that the sun can be quite harsh, but that we live outdoors and often dine outside at night as well."

Two display homes at Bayfields showcase this building style.

They feature al fresco living areas flowing from interior entertaining areas onto covered outdoor spaces.

The wide eaves provide solar protection for natural thermal efficiency to promote summer cooling but still allow the retention of the warmth of the winter sun.

The estate will feature 181 lots when fully completed, some of which are up to 2000 square metres and with views of Stradbroke Island and Moreton Bay.

Mr Fletcher said his company was genuinely impressed that the vast majority of new homebuyers in the estate had embraced Ausbuild's design guidelines, particularly in relation to the choice of COLORBOND® steel.

"As a designer I like the flexibility of steel as a material. We have used BHP Steel roofing material in the traditional manner as well as producing some very contemporary curved roof forms. We have also used it as a wall cladding."
