A
series of five cottages at Dapto south of Sydney is part of a bold
worldwide movement dubbed New Urbanism to adopt principles of sustainable
development, halt urban sprawl and reduce reliance on cars.
The terraced cottages designed and built by Barrington Homes
in partnership with land developer Miltonbrook provide high quality,
affordable housing that can be built on smaller lots for people who
want to live in a low maintenance dwelling.
The cottages which feature roofing made from COLORBOND® steel
are located within walking distance from Dapto railway station, shops
and medical facilities.
The development is the forerunner to a 1500 home traditional
township called Tullimbah Village near Wollongong which Barrington
and Miltonbrook claim will set new Australian benchmarks for world
' s best practice in urban design.
" New urbanism is all about creating mixed-use developments
in which the housing, employment and shops are created in a town centre,
reducing people ' s reliance on cars and the need to travel
and commute, " said Andrew Manson of Barrington Homes.
" We are trying to highlight this new philosophy surrounding
sustainability because construction is just sprawling out over the
land, using up all of our natural resources - and the planet is suffering
something of a crisis as a result. "
" The average commuting time is now 40 to 45 minutes
per individual and Australia is just as far behind as the rest of
the world in addressing these issues in our urban environments.
"
The cottages at North Terrace Dapto are one of a diverse range
of housing styles planned for Tullimbah Village to attract a wide
cross-section of home buyers from all ages, family types and income
levels.
" We built the cottages as part of a trial for the types
of homes that can be established on centrally located smaller lots
to minimise the urban sprawl that is occurring, " said
Mr Manson.
" The three-bedroom cottages offer quality design features,
with well articulated exteriors, high pitched roof forms, gables and
verandah elements that add to the visual interest and amenity of each
one.
Andrew Manson said the cottages include roofing made from COLORBOND
steel as part of the design approach.
" Corrugated roofing in COLORBOND® steel suits the smaller
scale of these cottages and also resonates with the traditional miners
' cottages that were historically built in the Illawarra region.
" We chose a series of the new COLORBOND® steel grey tones
including Windspray and Woodland Grey which also help to give the
cottages a light floating feel, rather than the imposing presence
of a heavier tiled roof. "
