A Sydney builder is helping to keep Australia's past alive by recapturing the characteristics of the Colonial era in custom-built homes.

Australian Colonial Homes offer homebuyers the chance to enjoy old-style living in a modern setting. Its designs offer a combination of colonial comfort and contemporary convenience.

Managing director of Australian Colonial Homes, Darren Theuns, said his designs were generally requested for blocks of land in bush settings or on extensive acreage.

"Our colonial style homes suit natural settings. They all feature corrugated steel roofs that naturally blend in with the environment," he said.

Australian Colonial Homes uses COLORBOND® steel for all its roofing, gutters and downpipes.

COLORBOND® steel made by BHP Steel has been meeting the demands of the Australian environment for more than 30 years.

"Apart from considerations of style I believe COLORBOND® steel is superior to other roofing products when it comes to strength and security," Mr Theuns said.

"It is a lot stronger than other roofing products and provides protection for the house against extreme weather conditions such as hail."

Mr Theuns said the light weight of COLORBOND® steel reduced the load bearing requirements and costs of associated roof framing, yet at the same time its fastening system provided excellent protection against strong winds.

"COLORBOND® steel offers home security," Mr Theuns said. "The steel helps stop break-ins via the roof and can offer protection against bush fires, which is of considerable importance in view of the environments in which our homes are built."

He said the look of COLORBOND® steel, particularly with its recently extended range of colours, ideally matched the look of his company's homes.

Mr Theuns' company has limited its output to approximately a dozen colonial classic homes a year for 10 years, concentrating on quality workmanship.

His own colonial-style home doubles as his company's display home.

"I used COLORBOND® steel in the colour Woodland Grey for my home - a colour that blends in nicely with the natural environment," he said.
