Houses
which feature steel roofing have picked up the lion's share of Victorian
Building and Design awards for 2002.
Steel-roofed houses featured in 58 of the 82 eligible Victorian
awards presented by the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the
Master Builders Association of Victoria and the Building Designers
Association of Victoria - including the top awards by all three
organisations.
This represents a 70 percent success rate for steel-roofed houses
over those using alternative roofing materials.
The light weight, flexibility and durability of steel roofing has
made it a popular choice with architects, designers and builders.
MBA of Victoria 2002 Master Builder of the Year, Bernie Morrison,
selected roofing made from COLORBOND® steel for his award-winning
entry at Ashbourne near Woodend.
Mr Morrison, who has collected a career total of 17 state and regional
awards, uses roofing made from COLORBOND® steel in all his new
homes.
"The number one reason we use COLORBOND® steel is for
its appearance - in fact I would never recommend anyone use anything
else," said Mr Morrison.
"Maintenance is virtually nil, there's little risk of damage
to house contents through roof destruction from hail and its light
weight means that building costs can be reduced."
The 18 COLORBOND® steel roofing colours, researched and developed
by BHP Steel for Australian conditions, are compatible with current
design trends.
The HIA Victorian Home of the Year - a Japanese-inspired three-storey
townhouse - used roofing made from COLORBOND® steel.
The Building Designers Association of Victoria gave its top award
- the Building Design of the Year - to a waterfront home at Paynesville
on the Gippsland Lakes that also uses roofing made from COLORBOND®
steel.
The variety of the three top award winners - a country home, a
suburban townhouse and a waterside home - highlights the flexibility
of steel roofing in modern home design.
A range of award winners used roofing made from COLORBOND®
steel, including contract homes, project homes, display homes, units,
industrial and public buildings.
A Glenville display home in South Warrandyte with a roof made from
COLORBOND® steel took out the MBA People's Choice Award.
