Sets Tone for Award-Winning Home |

| A Sunshine Coast home which features a large veranda as its centrepiece has won the 2003 Queensland Building Design Award for the Most Innovative Use Of Steel. Queensland designer Tim Cronin's design for a home in Pelican Waters, Caloundra uses a combination of industrial materials juxtaposed with innovative detailing. Mr Cronin designed the home around a theme of outdoor living to suit Queensland's warm climate. The outdoor room-cum-veranda, perched over the kitchen is a focal point of the home. The north-east facing skillion roof made from COLORBOND® steel in the colour Surfmist is balanced by steel posts, creating a lean-to effect. The steel framed cantilevered veranda creates shade in the summer and adds a striking appeal to the home. "When I designed the outdoor room veranda, it became central to the design - and I realised it would be interesting to incorporate steel in other parts of the home," Mr Cronin said. The stylish and functional outdoor room features a wood-fired pizza oven, barbeque and two-way fire place, all shielded behind steel grilles. Mr Cronin said using roofing made from COLORBOND® steel gave him extensive design freedom for the home. COLORBOND® steel is made in Australia by Australia's leading steel company, BlueScope Steel. "I needed a material that was strong but lightweight to enable me to come up with interesting design solutions," he said. He said COLORBOND® steel was easy to erect and durable - factors which made it a practical roofing solution for the Pelican Waters home. "It's easy to clean and low maintenance, and combined with other materials in the home it provides interesting textural features." The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home features pivoting doors in glass, steel and wood. Commercial building materials such as steel and toughened glass are used in combination with traditional residential construction materials to add innovative texture and form.
