Summer Beach Shack is Strengthened with Steel

11th February 2003

The light weight of steel framing together with its ease of fabrication and transport has simplified construction of a Sydney beach house with water-only access.

The two-storey Peter Downes-designed house at Great Mackerel Beach sits on Pittwater inlet opposite the Palm Beach Public Wharf on Sydney's northern beaches.

The 150 square metre three-bedroom house has an open plan design with a vaulted foyer ceiling for uncluttered beachside living.

It was built using framing made from ZINCALUME® steel. ZINCALUME® steel made by BHP Steel will not warp, burn or sustain termite damage and offers up to four times the life expectancy of traditional galvanised sheet steel.

Multi-award winning designer Peter Downes from Peter Downes Designs said the framing made from ZINCALUME® steel enabled him to maximise the space in the house and achieve greater spans.

"Steel allows you to span much longer distances than other framing materials without the need for wall bracing," he said.

"We were able to minimise the posts underneath the house - an enormous benefit because it allowed space for water and waste tanks. We were also able to cantilever the deck right to the edge of the creek that covers half of the site."

The framing made from ZINCALUME® steel was transported to the site by helicopter in 16 lifts over three hours from the Palm Beach peninsula.

Owner builder Peter Hegarty said some of the residents from the 130 dwellings around Great Mackerel Beach had been astonished at the fast rate at which the steel framed structure was assembled.

"This is the first house we have built using framing made from ZINCALUME® steel and we will definitely use it again," Peter Hegarty said.

"It is quick to prefabricate, transport was a fraction of the cost of moving other materials across to the site, and termites will not be able to destroy our holiday home."

Mr Hegarty said the use of steel framing permitted the construction of a curved roof, which will be made from COLORBOND® steel in the colour Torres Blue.

"The inherent strength of the house due to steel framing will not only add value to the place but give us peace of mind," he said.
